59. These shops were situated in Engine Street, or George Street as it is now known, at the corner of Engine Lane. The Airdrie Advertiser newspaper office with its red pantiled roof has long since been replaced by modern shops, but appropriately it is R.S. McCoUs Confectioners and Newsagents, which now occupies the site. The boys leaning on the kerb side fountain are a reminder that many of Bathgate's homes did not have their own running water supply and that families had to come down into the st reet to the well to fiU their pails.
