59 We have arrived outside the cottage only faintly visible in the last picture, and here, in around 1910, the only house in Church Raad. It was to remain sa for almast another forty years. In the

1890s twelve people lived at Shepherd's Cottage: Samuel Drury, his wife Mary Ann and their ten children. At the gate, in this remarkably sharp photograph, are Mary Ann and her daughter, Kate, who was bom in 1 877. Two ofher sans stand outside the door with the poreh. Customers entered by this door to buy the sweets which Mrs. Drury obtained from Hawkes Bros. of Chelmsford and villagers still remember her taking the sweets round to sell to work-

ers in the fields. In the cricket season she prepared the teas for players on their ground adjoining. Bath Mary Ann's father, and her husband, Samuel, worked as carpenters on the Priory Estate. Much al-

tered, it still retains the name of'Shepherd's Cottage.
