86. The musicians in this picture, taken on High Green in 1912, are members of the Brompton Orchestra. A contemporary newspaper item gives report of a Bachelor's Social evening held at the Oddfellows Hall at which this popular orchestra presented a concert and then provided 'sprightly' musie for the dancing that followed. During the winter months entertainment of this nature was well supported and the orchestra provided musie for the weekly dancing classes held in the Oddfellows Hall.

87. Before the Great War there were three football teams in the village playing in different leagues, and each one regularly becoming league champions at the end of the season. The 1912 team, here shown, won both the Allertonshire League and the Milbank Charity Cup. The previous year the teams inside right, Neesarn, was signed to play for Grangetown in the Northern League. Severa1 of these young men were to lose their Iives in the War. Of recent years the Brompton football team has been revived and maintains the high standards set by these proud lads.

88. Despite its long history, Brompton has only appeared on the pages of our national history on one occasion. On August 22nd, 1138, the Battle of the Standard, between the English and the Scots, was fought within the parish, just to the north of the village settlement. The Scots suffered heavy lcsses: hundreds of their dead were buried along the line of a later bridle path known as Scot Pits Lane, This lane and Standard Hill farm were the only means of recalling the Battle until the erection of the monument on the Darlington Road to the west of the village in 1910 by public subscription at a cost of f:2 6.18 s. Od.
