30. The Moot Hall stands on the seafront. It is a Tudor timber-framed building, regarded as one of the finest of its kind. Originally there we re two rows of houses between it and the sea but these have long sin ce vanished under the waves. The Hall's exposure to all weathers necessitated extensive repairs in 1855 and again in the twentieth century. For four hundred years the Town Council has assembied up the stairs in the main chamber, rieh in dark oak, the scene of the opening of Benjamin Britteri's opera 'Peter Grimes'.
