79. In 1902 a Burnham oyster merchant Mr. J. Smith, who owned what is now the Customs and Excise office on the Quay, feneed in an adjoining part of the Quay which he claimed as his property. The people of Burnham strongly opposed his action and a band of men organized by Mr. Ebenezer Dilliway took the law into their own hands and removed the fence. Mr. Smith threatened legal action against Mr. Dilliway, but the Council sought legal ad vice and decided to back Mr. Dilliway's action and to bear any costs incurred by a law suit. Mr. Smith dropped the matter and there was no further argument about the ownership of that part of the Quay.

80. A Remembrance Day service at the town War Memorial. Officiating are Mr. C.D. Gooding, Baptist Minister for over fifty years, the Reverend D.L. Williams, Church of England, Mr. Lewis, Congregational Minister, and a member of the Salvation Army.

81. Burnham fire engine in action in the High Street. The men in fisherman's jerseys are operating the hand pump. The engine could be drawn by men to nearby fires, but harses would be used for further afield.

82. The 1897 flooding of Burnham Quay. The floods of this winter also affected the High Street and caused extensive damage along the Essex coast.

84. lee in the River Crouch 1897. The barge is alongside the Quay near the Burnham Yacht Club and The Lawn. In the background the coastguard hulk 'Kangaroo' can be seen.
