49. THE 'SWIFTSURE'. The 'Swiftsure', as can be seen, was of an unusual shape, a typical 'char-a-banc'. (French = benched carriage; an open coach with transverse seating.) It made its first run on Tuesday afternoon, 14th August, 1906 to St. Osyth. The return journey to Clacton was via Weeley Heath, Great Clacton, along Valley Road, back to the Middlesex Convalescent Home then along Marine Parade. The fust Public Service run began the next morning. Built by the Lancashire Steam Motor Co., its 4-eylinder motor with low tension magneto ignition developed 35-40 h.p. However, this vehicle was not noted for its reliability and was known locally as the 'Neversure'. This picture shows Mr. C.F. Barnes at the wheel. He had the fust (Public) Drivers Licence issued in the Town, and Barnes Coaches was the oldest Motor Coach Co. in Clacton. The London Motor Van and Wagon Co. began to run the fust motor cab service in the town at Whitsun in the year 1898.
