59. Wa/bottle, Hawthorn Terrace, 1910. An example of the type of postcard being produced by national postcard printers. The first man to produce a set of postcards on a national scale was a keen outdoor photographer called Francis Frith. Mr. Frith was wealthy enough to equip himself with a mobile photo laboratory and travel around the country taking and developing 20' x 16' glass plate negatives of whateverinterested hirn. He began his perambulations in the late 1860s and was able to cash in on the boom in postcard sales by producing prints from his plates when the J1d stamp was introduced for cards in 1878. Firms such as Valentines followed the example of Francis Frith and had postcards produced for towns and villa ges all over the U. K. Although the quality of the photography on these was often superior to locally produced cards, the national firms often lacked local knowiedge, resulting in errors on the cards. In this case a view of the newly-built Hawthom Terrace includes a miss-spelling, common amongst strangers, of Walbottle as Wallbottle.

60. Walbottie village, Methodist Church East 19fO. Another card labelled by the same hand as card 59, and produced by the same firm. In this case the miss-spelling had been 'corrected' by being split into two words, Wall Battle. This card shows one ofthe two Methodist churches then in the village. Befare Methodist union in 1932 most villages had two or more chapels, usually Wesleyan and Prirnitive , with the occasion al United Methodist congregation.
