145 Decorated Tram Car, 1909.

When the Home and Atlantic Fleets visited Southend the town celebrated with patriotic fervour, which extended even to this extravagant tram decoration. A dreadnought sits on the roof of the car, which bears the slogan along its side, 'Welcome to Our Sailors', almost hidden by the forest of flags and bunting. The political purpose of the visit was achieved; rwo days after the fleets steamed back to sea, the Government approved the building offour more dreadnoughts.

146 War Memorial, Westcliff-on-Sea,

This striking monument was tinveiled in 192 1 and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. During the Second World War, Southend was hit by several V-I and V- 2 rockets. A total of sixty citizens were killed in the bombing raids. The legacy of war remains to this day; the remains of the American munitions ship Richard Mantgamery and part of the Mulberry harbour meant for the D-Day landings lie wrecked off Southend.
